With his wild and virtuous keyboard skills and incredibly catchy rhythms, Islam Chipsy represents a fresh addition to this year’s Ekko Festival. His music is a mix of traditional Egyptian music with western melodies that he plays on the accompanied by two drummers. His sound is inspired by traditional festival and wedding music in Cairo, adapted to live gigs at club and concert venues.
Chipsy is trained in traditional Egyptian music, but the twenty-eight year old has already developed his own unique style and technique for his shows, both as a solo act and with his band EEK, over the past years. Youtube has been an important channel for reaching out to new audiences and has brought the group to international attention.
Chipsy’s band EEK recently had their debut EP released on Nashazphone, an Algerian/Egyptian label based in Cairo that focuses on newer punk, psych, jazz and other experimental genres. The EP gives but a glimpse of the kind of musical chaos one can expect of a concert with this artist.
