"If the people who invented house and techno were Arab, what would it sound like?" This was the outset for Resident Advisor’s piece on Deena Abdelwahed last summer. Coming from the Tunisian alternative music scene, Deena is researching the field of ‘Arab futuristic club music’ and inventing it as she goes. Now based in Toulouse, Deena Abdelwahed has created a personal and innovative mix between western dance music and Arabic sounds without being overly reverent to any of the traditions. Her latest release KLABB on InFiné is an outstanding fusion of footwork and social commentary, reminding us of the anything but un-political roots of dance music without ever neglecting the ‘dance’ part.
